2012 VP Debate Analysis: So, Who Won?

Fireworks flew last night at the fiery and spirited VP debate last night! It was easy to forget that you were watching a Vice Presidential Debate and hard to believe that these candidates were not, in fact, running for the top office in the land. Any disappointed viewers who fell asleep during the drab first Presidential Debate last week were likely satisfied by the grit and substance of the Biden/Ryan face-off.

Often times, when the dust has settled, people are looking for winners and losers in the horse race. “Who won?” everybody wants to know. “What do the polls say?” “What do independent voters say?” “How are the swing states trending?” A CNN insta-poll reported that Ryan won by a 48 to 44 percent margin. However, a CBS insta-poll reported that Biden won by a 50 to 31 percent margin. The pundits are equally split on the end results.

The debate deserves a much more careful analysis of the topics covered, the plot holes exposed, the strategic messages delivered, and the gut reactions they summoned in viewers. After all, the debates are not designed to be popularity contests — as they are sometimes watered down into. They are meant to give the American people a better sense of the positions and results both parties are offering.
