The National Journal Interviews Mondale

The National Journal Online published a good interview with Walter Mondale, chronicling the Vice Presidential nominating process from beginning to end. Read the full interview here.

"Pick someone who can be a good president.
Don't put anybody on that list that doesn't pass that test," the wise 80-year-old Mondale advised the Obama camp.

"Put a lot
of emphasis on compatibility because under this new arrangement that we
started, you're together 24/7 four years, maybe eight years, and if it
doesn't work, it's like a bad marriage but you can't get a divorce."

"Pick somebody that adds strengths, new dimensions, to your presidency
where you might need help. Carter, you know, had never been in federal
government, so there were a lot of places that I think I was able to
help him."

"And then be darn sure that whoever you pick doesn't have
problems which, if exposed, would be real trouble."

The Minnesota Post also published a noteworthy article about how the Democratic National Convention gave Mondale a huge boost in the polls. He talks about some of the challenges Obama will be facing, adding: "You know this is the ONE time you'll have to state your case to the world. There is no question-and-answer period. There's no debate. This is your chance.''
