First, there was David Letterman. Then, Naomi Campbell. And now the most unlikely object of a stalker's affections makes his way onto the world stage. It's Garrison Keillor. The Associated Press reports that Keillor--a long-time radio personality and star of the film A Prairie Home Companion (based on his popular NPR program) filed for a restraining order against Andrea R. Campbell, 43.
The 65-year-old star claims that the Georgia woman has sent him explicit correspondence and bizarre gifts including dead insects and alligator fossils. According to the complaint, Campbell's emails were "disturbing, unintelligible and rambling," and "graphically described making love to me."
Yikes!
The World of the crazed fan has long been a cash-cow for the tabloid set. In 2005, Catherine Zeta Jones' stalker, Dawnette Knight, was sentenced to three years in prison after making numerous threats to the actress including a promise to "slice her up like meat on a bone and feed her to the dogs."
David Letterman's stalker, Margaret Ray, committed suicide in 1998, after breaking into the talk show host's house and pretending to be his wife.
And even pop maven, Madonna has made headlines testifying against unwanted paramours. People.com (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,617334,00.html) reported in 1998 that the "Material Girl's" most famous obsessive fan, Robert D. Hoskins, continued to pursue the superstar, even after he was arrested.
Still, Keillor's stalker comes as a bit of a surprise to most, as he operates in the least glamorous and flashy of Entertainment sects. He claims that the incidents listed in his complaint began around April 28--shortly after Campbell attended a live taping of "A Prairie Home Companion" (the radio program).
In the grand tradition of crazy people living in their own little realities, Campbell seems completely oblivious to her subject's concerns:
"I am unclear as to what the problem is," she confessed.
Indeed.
