If you were one of the Twin Peaks-devotees who tuned in every week in the early '90s to find out who killed Laura Palmer, then your Christmas list just got longer. Or maybe not.
Twin Peaks: The Definitive Gold Box Edition has just been released. For a hefty $108.99, you can take home this 10-disc monster that includes the series' second season, which even director David Lynch calls not "nearly as interesting." One of the show's actors simply says it "sucked."
But if you were transfixed (as I was, admittedly,) by the first season of this eerie night-time soap opera, the purchase might well be worth it for the bountiful extras: mini-documentaries on the making of the series including interviews with actors; the 90-minute European version of the pilot which offers an alternate ending that solves the murder mystery and also heightens the strangeness of the show (if that's even possible); individual episodes introduced by the Log Lady (Catherine E. Coulson) -- you know the lady who... carried around the log; and "A Slice of Lynch" where director David sits next to a piece of cherry pie and chats with cast members.
Unwrapping this bulky box set is like opening a very strange treasure chest (or coffin). So for those of you Peaks fans lurking in the shadows, you can now revisit your favorite homecoming queen corpse as it washes ashore in a foggy Northwest town, wrapped in plastic; FBI agent Dale Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan) as he consumes copious amounts of strong coffee and cherry pie; and foxy Sherilyn Fenn as she ties a cherry stem with her tongue.
That is, if you've got enough dough.
Cherry Pie, Strong Coffee, A Log Lady...
