Veep to Richard Nixon

 Spiro Agnew

Spiro Agnew. 39th Veep, served from 1969-1973, and was forced to resign from office.  Mr. Agnew was the second Veep to resign from office (John Calhoun was first).

Several months after Gerald Ford assumed the Vice Presidency in 1973, he became President in 1974 when another former Veep, President Richard Nixon, resigned from office.  That is how close Spiro Agnew was to becoming President of the United States.

Birth and Death (November 9, 1918 – September 17, 1996)

55th Govenor of Maryland where he served less than two years.

Spiro Agnew was barely Governor for 18 months before selected as VP to Richard Nixon. Before that, he was a Baltimore County Executive. Interesting enough, Mr. Nixon was also a young VEEP when selected by Dwight Eisenhower in 1952. At that time, Mr. Nixon just had a few terms in the House and was in his first Senate term when he was selected.
